Notes on Korean numbers
Zero: 공 vs 영
Most of the time, 공 is used.
영 is used for metrics, for example
- 영 degrees(도) Celcius
- 영 mm (밀리미터)
Pronunciation
- 16: 십육 (Pronounced as 심뉵)
- Keep this pronunciation for 26, 36, and so on…
- If I want to read 66 as six six, it is pronounced like: 융뉵
- If I want to read 66 as six six but not in the beginning, for example 2966, it is pronounced like: 이구륭뉵
- Phone numbers, the – is pronounced as 에
- Bus numbers: for example 17 is 십질 (17) 번 (#) 버스 (bus)
Fun fact about the bus numbers in Taiwan, for 2 digit numbers we read it like seventeen (17), but if it’s three digit it becomes two zero six (206) not two hundred and six.
