As I’m prepping for N2, I’ve started watching anime without subtitles to improve my listening, so these words probably don’t have too much of a connection, but just capturing what I heard from the anime.

堪らない たまらない meaning Irresistible

• 俺のことを庇った
  庇う（かばう）- protect, defend, stand up for someone
• 馴れ馴れ（なれなれ）しくすんな
  stop acting like we’re buddies, 少跟我裝熟
  馴れ馴れしい – overly friendly, cheeky
  すんな – rude way to say するな
  ヤンキー likes to talk like this
• 普通、引くだろう？
  一般人通常都會退縮吧？（你這傢伙是怎麼回事？）
  Normal people would back off by now (what’s wrong with this dude)…
  引く（ひく）put off by someone’s bad behavior, grossed out, 感到反感
• 親しくもねぇだろう
  親しい（したしい）- close, intimate
• よくねぇつってんだろう
  つって as a very colloquial contraction of って言って
  つってんだろう == って言っているんだろ
• 首を突っ込む（くびをつっこむ）
  插手、多管閒事
  poke your nose in
• なんで切り離さないんだよ
  切り離す – 斷絕關係、拒絕往來, cut me loose
• 突き放す　つきはなす
  push away
• キリがねぇ
  沒完沒了, there’s no end to this (annoyed)
• 目障り　めざわり
  眼中釘 eyesore
• 近寄りたい　ちかよりたい
  近寄る get close

どんぐらい、どれぐらい、どのぐらい

Heard どんぐらい in a YouTube video (will mention below), and wanted to write down now I know three ways to ask!

All three can be used interchangeably. Ask about quantities, time, distance, degree, etc.

ぐらい and くらい is also the same, with ぐらい being more used in everyday (informal) language.

どのぐらい: Standard and polite. Safe for most situations.

東京から京都まで、新幹線でどのぐらいかかりますか？

どれぐらい: Also standard and very common in daily conversation.

昨日のテスト、どれぐらい難しかった？

どんぐらい : A casual, contracted version. It’s “slangy” and best used with friends.

昨日の夜、どんぐらい寝た？

All example sentences can swap out with each of the choices 🙂

Going through the list of shows on Netflix but can’t even pick one!!!! I can relate to that from the podcast.

自分はやることもないし、見たいものすらないのか！！？？？
I have nothing to do, and I don’t even have anything I want to watch?!

Usually used in a negative way.

〜子供ですら知ってる。
Even a child knows that.

昔のウェブサイト。

先週私はたまごっちについて話しました。それあとで私は Tumblr の Neocities コミュニティを見つけました。Neocities では、みんな90年代スタイルのウェブサイトを作っています。
私もたまごっちウェブサイトを作りました。

画面のURLを見てください。

こういうウェブサイトを作った人は、たいていアニメが好きとか、ゲームをすることが好きな人だと気づきました。

昔のウェブはもっと面白いと思っています。今はみんなインスタ、ティックトック、ユーチューブ、ツイッタなどのプラットフォームを使っています。そのせいで、同じようなものばかりを見ていて、ちょっとつまらないです。

昔のウェブサイトはその人の好みとか、個性とか、こだわりが詰まっていて、その人の家みたいな感じだけど、今はみんな同じマンションで、同じ小さい部屋のような感じ。

歳をとったと感じます。

たまごっち

最近たまごっちをしています。それは20年前のゲームです。私のクラスでは、みんなたまごっちで遊びました。そして、最近お兄さんは日本でたまごっちを買ってくれました。昔のたまごっちを持っていることを思い出して、探しました。今、私はふたつ持っています。一つは自分で遊んで、他のは彼氏にあげます。

私のバージョンはもっと機能があります。結婚することができて、赤ちゃんを産むこともできます。そして、わたしが育てたたまごっちは、赤ちゃんを産んだ後二日間は赤ちゃんの世話をしますが、そのあといなくなって、でも一週間ほどは時々戻ってきて、プレゼントをくれます。一週間後は、完全にいなくなります。かわりに、わたしがいま、赤ちゃんを育てています。

よく考えると、この仕組みは今の社会と同じです。もし両親がお金持ちだったら、子供もリッチです。最初の世代だけはバイトしなければなりません。もしバイトしないと、食べ物を買えないです。でも第2世代からは、両親がリッチなので、バイトしなくても大丈夫です。

Ways to describe a lot of people

Today in class we talked about New Year’s Eve, and I noticed I’ve always been using たくさんの人

Time to add some other versions to my vocabulary!

多 (おお) くの人

like たくさんの人

多くの人が電車を待っています。
Many people are waiting for the train.

すごい人数 (にんずう)

overwhelming number of people

駅にすごい人数が集まっていた。
There was an overwhelming number of people gathered at the station.

大勢 (おおぜい) の人

refers to crowds or large gatherings of people

• Can only be used for people
• Often used for events, concerts, or public spaces

コンサートには大勢の人が集まっていた。
A large crowd gathered at the concert.

人混 (ご) み

crowded places or areas, situations where you need to navigate through crowds, like the New Year’s Eve countdown event

駅の人混みを通りました。
I went through the station crowd.

One fun fact I learned was the New Year’s Eve countdown is called 大晦日 (おおみそか) のカウントダウン

Always fun to realize when I cannot find a word for that in Japanese, all I need to do is just Katakana-ize the English word 🤣

I used to think NHK stuff is boring until my Japanese teacher shared it with me today. They tried to “animenize” some dry topics like environmental topics. I find it quite cringe to watch the actor, but also much more fun if they didn’t do that.
